چکیده

Isenberg, Henry D. (Long Island Jewish Hospital, New Hyde Park, N.Y.), Jona Allerhand, James I. Berkman, and Dorothy Goldberg. Immunological and toxic differences between mouse-virulent and mouse-avirulent Candida albicans. J. Bacteriol. 86:1010-1018. 1963.-The differences between mouse-avirulent and -virulent strains of Candida albicans reside at least in part in cell surface materials which can be extracted with solvents such as ethanolethyl ether and phenol. These extracts are complex haptens which behave like endotoxins in mice and rabbits. Antibodies produced against intact and extracted cells show some strain specificity in agglutination and precipitin reactions, but underline primarily the differences between the virulent and avirulent variants. The chemical constitution of the extracted complex haptens suggests that the toxic or virulent principles are polysaccharide in nature and that the avirulent strain substitutes fats and lipids for some polysaccharides on their cell surface.

Comparison of the Antifungal Activity of Honey and Fluconazole against Candida albicans in vitro and in an Enteric Candidiasis Mouse Model

Background & Objective: Candidiasis has gained importance due to its increasing prevalence in immunocompromised patients. Antifungal drugs such as fluconazole and amphotericin B are used for the treatment of candidiasis. One of the biggest problems faced in clinical practice is resistance for most of these drugs. The antifungal drugs derived from natural products have helped to overcome this pr...

Candida albicans uses multiple mechanisms to acquire the essential metabolite inositol during infection.

Candida albicans is an important cause of life-threatening systemic bloodstream infections in immunocompromised patients. In order to cause infections, C. albicans must be able to synthesize the essential metabolite inositol or acquire it from the host. Based on the similarity of C. albicans to Saccharomyces cerevisiae, it was predicted that C. albicans may generate inositol de novo, import it ...

Candida albicans killing by RAW 264.7 mouse macrophage cells: effects of Candida genotype, infection ratios, and gamma interferon treatment.

Phagocytic cells such as neutrophils and macrophages are potential components of the immune defense that protects mammals against Candida albicans infection. We have tested the interaction between the mouse macrophage cell line RAW 264.7 and a variety of mutant strains of C. albicans. We used an end point dilution assay to monitor the killing of C. albicans at low multiplicities of infection (M...

Proper Sterol Distribution Is Required for Candida albicans Hyphal Formation and Virulence

Candida albicans is an opportunistic fungus responsible for the majority of systemic fungal infections. Multiple factors contribute to C. albicans pathogenicity. C. albicans strains lacking CaArv1 are avirulent. Arv1 has a conserved Arv1 homology domain (AHD) that has a zinc-binding domain containing two cysteine clusters. Here, we explored the role of the CaAHD and zinc-binding motif in CaArv1...

Immunofluorescence Method for The Detection of Non-Pathogenic Influenza Virus

The direct F.A. Method has been used for differentiation of virulent and avirulent lines of influenza viruses. A positive fluorescence was obtained indicating the level of virus in the tissues, sorbing with dried mouse powder helped to reduce non-specific staining. The virulent line showed the greatest number of fluorescent cells with the peak at 10 hours. the non-virulent lines showed a gra...
